Jose Abreu named the American League’s Most Valuable Player

It’s been quite the awards season for the Chicago White Sox and Jose Abreu in particular. After already taking home the Sporting News Major League Baseball Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Player Award in October, and an American League Silver Slugger Award last week, Abreu was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player by the BBWAA on Thursday evening.

Abreu becomes just the fourth different player to win the American League’s most prestigious individual honor in franchise history. Previous winners include Frank Thomas (1993, 94), Dick Allen (1972), and Nellie Fox (1959).

Abreu, 33, hit .317/.370/.617 (76-240) with 15 doubles, 19 home runs, 60 RBI, 148 total
bases, 34 extra-base hits, and 21 multi-hit efforts in 60 games this season, his seventh with the White Sox.

Abreu became just the third Cuban native to be named the American League Most Valuable Player, joining Oakland’s Jose Canseco (1988) and Minnesota‚Äôs Zoilo Versalles (1965).

In addition to Abreu’s handful of awards, this season the White Sox have seen other players take home postseason honors this year. Shortstop Tim Anderson and outfielder Eloy Jimenez each took home Silver Slugger Awards last week, and Luis Robert was named the Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner for American League center-fielders.

Since joining the White Sox in 2014, here’s a look at the collection of awards and honors that Abreu has taken home:

  • American League Rookie of the Year (2014)
  • American League Silver Slugger (2014, 2018, 2020)
